内容記述 This paper reports on a case of an ‘impromptu’ virtual exchange (VE) between Japanese and Korean universities. VE is an online collaboration where students from different cultures or locations work together as part of their courses, guided by instructors and/or experienced facilitators. The paper aims to develop and improve a VE model for university foreign language courses that are offered as liberal arts courses, especially for beginners. The paper also presents the findings of a post-VE survey with the students and discusses their evaluation of the VE.
The survey showed that the students had a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards the ‘impromptu’ VE, even though it was a one-time event and did not have the ideal conditions for a VE. A common theme that emerged from the survey results was the participant’s eagerness to build meaningful relationships
with partners from the target language and culture. They also demonstrated empathy and openness towards their partners, which are essential skills for intercultural communication. The paper argues that curiosity and openmindedness about cultures are crucial factors for developing effective intercultural communication skills. The paper concludes that the VE helped the students to develop these skills naturally through their participation.
