VE is an online collaboration where students from different cultures or locations work together as part of their courses, guided by instructors and/or experienced facilitators. The paper aims to develop and improve a VE model for university foreign language courses that are offered as liberal arts courses, especially for beginners. The paper also presents the findings of a post-VE survey with the students and discusses their evaluation of the VE. \nThe survey showed that the students had a positive and enthusiastic attitude \ntowards the ‘impromptu’ VE, even though it was a one-time event and did not have the ideal conditions for a VE. A common theme that emerged from the survey results was the participant’s eagerness to build meaningful relationships \nwith partners from the target language and culture. They also demonstrated \nempathy and openness towards their partners, which are essential skills for \nintercultural communication. The paper argues that curiosity and openmindedness about cultures are crucial factors for developing effective \nintercultural communication skills.
