This study explores the Japanese English as second language learners’ pragmalinguistic errors in the use of conjunction so, which may lead to incorrect cause-and-effect relationships in their English paragraph writings. Pragmalinguistic errors refer to a linguistic problem caused by differences in the linguistic encoding of pragmatic force. Fifty-three English paragraphs written by university sophomores were examined with focus on the use of conjunctions and conjunctive adverbials. Conjunctive adverbials logically connect sentences, clauses, and phrases and play a significant role in describing the relationship between a cause and an effect that writers intend to show. Besides lexical, syntactic, and other mistakes, it was found that students used a conjunction so more frequently than therefore and as a result. However, their usage of so often conveyed pragmatically wrong meanings, which led to impairment of cause-and-effect relationships in their writings. The study also discusses the possible causes of these pragmalinguistic errors: i.e., less instructional input of conjunction so, various meanings and usage of so, and some similarities between so and Japanese counterpart expressions. |
