The previous literature on Korean TV variety shows reveals various forms of subtitles
which do not appear at all in Japan, such as made-up versions of utterances on-air, expressions of feelings or thoughts as if people were speaking on-air, “the personification of animals” or objects as if they were speaking. This does not explain why these specific types of subtitles are used in Korea and what their purpose is, except to maximize amusement. This research was designed to figure out these details, by adopting the elements of a play, Aristotle’s Poetics. This research will analyze the two elements of plot and character, the most important elements in a play. The author will describe how these elements appear in subtitles by presenting detailed examples using the elements. It was found that subtitles in Korean reality TV shows work as an effective tool to construct narratives, so that the episodes are closely connected to one another, provide them with possibility and completion, and draw on the understanding and sympathy of the TV viewers. Subtitles also work as a device to create, construct, and/or modify characters in a narrative that are essential to the plot. |
