The previous literature on Korean TV variety shows revealed various forms
of subtitles which do not appear at all on Japanese TV, such as “the personification of animals.” The previous data included animals in part, but it did not deal with animals as the main characters. This study analyzed data that deals mainly with animals. The factors affecting the usage of subtitles were also considered. The results revealed subtitles for the personification of animals appearing on TV shows in both countries. The subtitles in Japan, however, displayed only animals in comic settings; on the other hand, subtitles in Korea were used throughout the TV shows. As for the patterns of the subtitles, Japanese TV shows adopted only the style of direct speech whereas Korean subtitles adopted multiple types of form and style. The difference in Korean and Japanese subtitles reflect the distance between humans and animals. In other words, Japanese TV shows adopted a strategy of distance from the animals; Korean TV shows used strategies to close this distance. |
