The study also categorizes Japanese verbs in accordance with their innate features. \n　Isami (1960) asserts that the combinations of verb and auxiliary verb, or, of verb and adverb are perceived natural in some cases, but not so in others, as a phenomenon which is independent of grammatical aspects. 　An example: \nMISE GA AITE IRU. \nMISE GA AITE ARU. \nin which the latter sounds unnatural. This is due to the innate feature in each elementary verb. \n　In the present experiment, 119 college students were asked to rate the naturalness of 570 simple sentences, which were the combinations of selected verbs, (30), auxiliary verbs (10) and adverbs (9). \n　The result of facter analisis indicates that four factors, out of five, can be interpreted in the following manner: \nThe 1st factor (G) purposive-non-purposive \n2nd (C) continuous-discontinuous \n3rd (V) animate-inanimate \n4th (T) terminable-interminable \nThe result of cluster analysis suggested two clusters: Continuity and discontinuity.
