The most\nobvious example is the movement required to physically produce sound\nfrom an instrument. Movements are also widely used to transmit\nparticular emotions during performance, to signal to other musicians or\nmembers of the audience, or to communicate between teacher and student\nin the transmission process. This paper presents the results of an ongoing\nfieldwork project to investigate the use of physical gestures in Okinawan\nclassical music, a tradition that uses a number of stylized gestures,\nparticularly those of the hands and head. These physical gestures are quite\noften discussed in the course of lessons and performances, and have also\nbeen theorized to some extent by Okinawan musicians and scholars.\n In this paper I focus particularly on movements of the head and upper\nbody in the Okinawan tradition. I consider the ways that these movements\nwere theorized and formalized in the early 20th century by Okinawan\nmusic scholars, as well as through their incorporation into a notation\nsystem. I also analyze two field recordings made during the course of the\nproject. The first of these illustrates the use of upper body movements in\nperformance as a way of embodying melodic movement, while the second\nillustrates how body movements are actively used as a part of the teaching\nprocess.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.34577/00000006","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_10002_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国際基督教大学","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"24346861","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"open access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Aycock, Brian Johnson","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"5","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2013-09-01"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"05-Matt Gillan.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.2 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"Theorizing the Okinawan body —Fieldwork on physical gestures in the performance of Okinawan classical music ","url":"https://icu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/7/files/05-Matt Gillan.pdf"},"version_id":"c7913c28-b4c8-4bd8-952a-3b3154535456"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Theorizing the Okinawan body —Fieldwork on physical gestures in the performance of Okinawan classical music","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Theorizing the Okinawan body —Fieldwork on physical gestures in the performance of Okinawan classical music","subitem_title_language":"ja"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"14","path":["6"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2013-09-01"},"publish_date":"2013-09-01","publish_status":"0","recid":"7","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Theorizing the Okinawan body —Fieldwork on physical gestures in the performance of Okinawan classical music"],"weko_creator_id":"14","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-10-04T04:27:11.784263+00:00"}
