Such consistencies may be called the coherence or reasonableness under which we understand authority,order,low,the right way of life,and the bases for control and regulation. Because of the natural freedom with which man is equipped he is responsible for all human phenomena and happenings,i.e.,history. This responsibility can not be discarded.\nIt is very difficult,however,assuming that we can call them \"human\",to find out what consistencies ought to be maintained throughout the processes of human occurrences and actions. It is even more difficult to travel along the coherent paths upon which the true life of man ought to move. I think that the former task is one of ethics,and the latter,namely the practical building of coherent paths established upon ethics,is a task for education.\nThese two tasks are seemingly carried out within two apparently opposing mental attitudes; one being transcendentalism,the other pragmatism. Representative of transcendentalism is Kant's theory of \"moral law\",representative of pragmatism is the concept of \"purpose\" as delineated in the philosophy of John Dewey.
