I traced the\npoetic allusions and associations with tears created by the toponyms and\nutamakura in the travelogue, using the CD-ROM version of the complete\nwaka collection Kokka Taikan. I came to the conclusion that although the\nimage of tears can be ambiguous and have multiple interpretations, one of\nits main functions is to evoke the character of Ukifune, the tragic heroine\nfrom the Tale of Genji, and to prepare the reader for a story with no romantic\ndevelopment—an unusual deviation from the genre of nikki bungaku, to\nwhich the Sarashina Diary belongs.\nTears are a focusing image in the final poems of the diary as well,\nproviding a connection with its beginning. The “hidden” tears in the\nopening part are a prelude to a life story where the protagonist suffers\nbereavement and disappointment, and romance is only a vicarious\nexperience through fiction. At the end of the story the heroine is “openly\nshedding tears” expressing an all-encompassing feeling of sadness,\nincluding sadness related to the absence and/or impossibility of romance.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.34577/00004861","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_10002_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国際基督教大学","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"24346861","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Barova-Özcan, Pana ","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"7815","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2021-04-23"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"The Poetic Meaning of Tears in the Opening and Closing Parts of the Sarashina nikki.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"793.3 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"The Poetic Meaning of Tears in the Opening and Closing Parts of the Sarashina nikki","url":"https://icu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/5078/files/The Poetic Meaning of Tears in the Opening and Closing Parts of the Sarashina nikki.pdf"},"version_id":"8905ba35-ac15-4d38-bb4d-e8b8237434fb"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"The Poetic Meaning of Tears in the Opening and Closing Parts of the Sarashina nikki","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"The Poetic Meaning of Tears in the Opening and Closing Parts of the Sarashina nikki","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"14","path":["540"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2021-04-23"},"publish_date":"2021-04-23","publish_status":"0","recid":"5078","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["The Poetic Meaning of Tears in the Opening and Closing Parts of the Sarashina nikki"],"weko_creator_id":"14","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-10-02T05:51:56.255529+00:00"}
