As a result of the civil rights movement of the\n1950s and 1960s, Black Studies and Women’s Studies had received increased\nattention at universities all over the country in the 1970s. Nevertheless, during\nthe 1980s, African-American women still were and today continue to be\n“hidden figures” in American society.\n　By focusing on their personal stories and the spiritual messages they\nincorporate, this paper will argue that within the heritage of African-American\nwomen we can find empowering messages that transcend the boundaries of\nethnicity and nationality.
