As a result of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Black Studies and Women’s Studies had received increased attention at universities all over the country in the 1970s. Nevertheless, during the 1980s, African-American women still were and today continue to be “hidden figures” in American society.  By focusing on their personal stories and the spiritual messages they incorporate, this paper will argue that within the heritage of African-American women we can find empowering messages that transcend the boundaries of ethnicity and nationality.
