Many celebrated a big victory for the LGBT\nmovement, saying, “now gay soldiers can serve openly and honestly. “\nHowever, was “the right to serve” really what LGBT communities asked for?\nLooking back on the history of the LGBT movement in the U.S., “the right to\nserve” was not always the self-evident goal for the movement.\n　This article analyzes the gay liberation movement in the U.S. in the early\n1970s, which actively engaged in the anti-Vietnam War movement and\ntried to resist against the draft. Using a historical approach, I examine the\nactivism by the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) chapters in California. I\ndemonstrate how the military policy that discriminated against gays as\nbeing unfit for service made the gay liberation movement’s strategy\ntoward the anti-draft resistance different from the one by straight men. In\norder to radically resist against the military draft policy, GLFers chose to\ncome out as gay and dared to be classified as 4-F deferment (unfit for\nservice). Their resistance against the draft through coming out originated\nfrom their belief in the radical potential of coming out to change a\nhomophobic society.\n　However, their strategy had two problems. The first was the double bind\nthey faced when they needed to criticize both the military’s discriminatory\npolicies and the military itself. Though they ultimately wanted to ban the\nmilitary, they also needed to prove their ability to serve and improve\nconditions for gay soldiers. Unable to handle this double bind situation,\nGLF yielded to the Gay Activist Alliance (GAA), which claimed the necessity\nof concentrating their time and energy exclusively on issues directly related\nto the gay community. The second problem was their difficulty in taking \ndifferences among the gay community into consideration in creating their\nstrategy against the draft.
