Yet few have understood the thoroughly biblical \nfoundations of his early-modern worldview. This article explores Edwards’ biblical \nunderstanding of the history of the world, centered as it was on the history of the \nredemption of the world in Jesus Christ, the crux of his philosophy of history. It \ndiscusses Edwards’ views of many relevant biblical texts, including his comments on \nthe Apocalypse (on which he kept a notebook) and its bearing on his Christian \nhistoriography. Nowhere is the difference between Edwards’ metaphysical and spiritual \nview of the world and later secular perspectives more apparent—even striking—than in \nhis biblical understanding of the shape of cosmic history.
