The space program was a realistic answer to the very American\nquestion: “how should the United States commit to the rest of the world?”\nThrough analyzing two speeches made by President Kennedy regarding sending\nastronauts to the moon, the author tries to illustrate the untold purpose of the\nspace program and the way in which the president convinced Congress and\nAmerican people.\nOn May 25, 1961, Kennedy made a speech titled “the Special Message to\nthe Congress on Urgent National Needs” in order to start up a space program\nthat aimed to send men to the moon and return them safely to Earth. Kennedy\ndeclared the “Freedom Doctrine” in this speech. By claiming that American\nstrength and conviction imposed upon the nation the role of leader in freedom’s\ncause, the president sought to persuade Congress to approve the program. He\nwas firmly convinced that the Soviet supremacy in space, such as Sputnik-1 and\nthe first manned flight by Gagarin, had greatly weakened the United States inforeign affairs. America must have achieved a prominent victory in space in order\nto win the battle on Earth between “Freedom and Tyranny.”\nIn a speech at Rice University on September 12, 1962, Kennedy stated that\nthe United States should have a leading role in science and technology, and\nemphasized that the nation must win the space race by being “first.” He believed\nthat science and technology, as well as Freedom, were aspects of Americannational identity. In addition, the president mentioned that it was difficult to keep\nspace peaceful unless the United States won the race against the Soviet Union.\nTo be the first nation to land men on the moon meant not only preventing the\nRussians from extending their power in space, but also showing off their ability\nto lead the world in every way.\nFreedom and scientific technologies, the national identity of the United\nStates, were severely threatened in the early 1960s because of the overwhelming\nsuperiority of the Soviet Union in space achievement. Under these very harsh\ncircumstances, the United States regarded their rival as a formidable challenge to\nthe American raison d’être as the world’s most advanced country. By spending 24\nbillion dollars and successfully conducting the space program, the United States\ntried to restore their image as the world’s leader in freedom’s cause and scientific\ntechnologies. As Kennedy himself articulated, the Apollo Program was an “act of\nfaith and vision.”","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.34577/00003993","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_10002_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国際基督教大学","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"03895475","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"open access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"青砥, 吉隆","creatorNameLang":"ja"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"5358","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-11-13"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"46-03aoto.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"520.5 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"信念とヴィジョンの証 —ケネディ大統領による二つの「月」演説の分析—","url":"https://icu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4099/files/46-03aoto.pdf"},"version_id":"703befed-5abf-4211-9a76-b5a50b6ac6f8"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"信念とヴィジョンの証 —ケネディ大統領による二つの「月」演説の分析—","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"信念とヴィジョンの証 —ケネディ大統領による二つの「月」演説の分析—","subitem_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_title":"The Act of Faith and Vision: Analysis of Two “Moon” Speeches Made by John F.
