Bellah\n\n The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, it aims to clarify the\ncharacteristics of the study of the Hebrew Prophets by Uchimura Kanzo,\nwho is called “a prophet in the modern era” both in Japan and abroad.\nSecond, this paper also attempts to show the significance of his study on\nthe Prophets in the history of Japanese thought in the light of Robert N.\nBellah’s concept “prophetic individualism”.\n In Section 1, I examine this concept of Bellah. About half a century ago\nhe introduced this concept in his discussion on “political loyalty” and “the\nresistance to power” in the history of Japan’s modernization. More\nattention needs to be paid to the implications of the fact that, at the end of\nthis discussion, Bellah gives special regard to Uchimura and his role in\nJapan’s history of “prophetic individualism”. In Section 2, I turn my\ndiscussion to Uchimura’s study of the Prophets. Its aim is to show that his\npresentation of each Prophet’s personality and actions is quite multifaceted\nin approach and rich in content. Section 3 presents three notable\nimages of the Prophets, which are found in Uchimura’s study. Those\nimages are: Prophets as revolutionaries or progressivists; Prophets as “the\nfriend of humankind” in the sense that they severely criticized people for\ntheir unmoral behavior; and, Prophets as the instrument of God as a result\nof being called by Him against their own will.\n In the following two sections I examine Uchimura’s political and social\nthought by focusing upon (1) his critique of patriotism and (2) his pacifist\nthought; both of which are closely linked to his study of the Prophets.\nSection 4 considers Uchimura’s critique of his contemporaries’ idea of\npatriotism and his own alternative to it. My aim is to explain the reasons\nwhy he regarded the patriotism of the Prophets as the best alternative for\nleading each nation to a morally right direction. In Section 5, I give the\nexamples of how Uchimura’s interpretation of the images of the Prophets\nin the Old Testament is related to his analysis of peace issues. These\nexamples prove, I argue, that in his pacifist thought the images of his\nProphets constitute not only the models for him to be followed in order to\nshow an absolute faith in God, but also the starting points to discover what\nhuman beings must do as their duty in this real world.\n In Section 6, the relation of Uchimura’s study of the Prophets with his\nsocial realism is examined on the basis of my discussion above. Referring\nto Bellah’s concept of “prophetic individualism” again, I demonstrate that\nUchimura was well aware of the limits of human nature but, at the same\ntime, founded his hope on the historical potentials which he detected in\n“the courage to stand utterly alone” from the Prophets in his study. This\nrecognition played a key role, I argue, in Uchimura’s realistic judgment of\nsocial situations in his contemporary period. The virtues shown by the\nProphets as well as their courage to fulfill their own duties led Uchimura\nto follow the footsteps of those predecessors in his own public life. This is\none of the most significant legacies that he left in Japan’s history of ethics.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.34577/00003945","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_10002_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国際基督教大学","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"00733938","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"open access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"柴田, 真希都","creatorNameLang":"ja"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"5336","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-09-01"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"15-柴田.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"2.1 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"内村鑑三における預言者研究の特色とその思想史的意義──ロバート・N・ベラーの議論をてがかりに──","url":"https://icu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4046/files/15-柴田.pdf"},"version_id":"2b80f771-c4d3-43b8-a119-d190332a3a48"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"内村鑑三における預言者研究の特色とその思想史的意義──ロバート・N・ベラーの議論をてがかりに──","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"内村鑑三における預言者研究の特色とその思想史的意義──ロバート・N・ベラーの議論をてがかりに──","subitem_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_title":"Characteristics and Historical Significance of Uchimura Kanzo’s Study of the Hebrew Prophets:With Aid from Robert N.
