Analysis of nineteenth century Gothic texts will provide evidence\nthat an admiration of female Gothic authors lead Dickinson to emulate\nmany of the themes, motifs, and symbols they used. Their influence\ncombines with her preoccupation with the space of the home, a\npredilection reflected in her letters and her poetry. Readings of Dickinson’s\npoems demonstrate that the home may be seen as both a physical space\n(the house) and a mental space (the mind). These spaces present positive\npossibilities as well as menacing confinement, a duality fundamental to\nthe Gothic genre. Dickinson also discusses houses in a similar way to\nGothic authors—namely, she writes of the house’s dual nature, that it can\nbe both familiar and frightening, and that it is an uncanny space. She treats\nthe house as an ambiguous subject and a powerful setting that can indicate\na radical differentiation between the meaning and unmeaning of events,\nand the significance or insignificance of persons.\n Overall, Dickinson’s poetry presents the reader with a phenomenology\nof home inextricable from the Gothic mode. Tangible constructions in the\nform of architectural metaphors lend support to her inherently ambiguous\nand often uncanny subject matter. Behind the doors and the windows,\ninside the chambers and underneath the gables of the houses in her poems,\nthere exist social values of hospitality, gentility, and distinction, the joy\nand comfort associated with a happy home, but also anxieties, guilt, and\nfears. She employs numerous themes and symbols to illustrate the various\nsignificances attached to space, but her poems are most Gothic in their use\nof the loss of the house, which condemns her narrators to a marginal\nexistence, disturbed, and unable to find a place to call “home.”","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.34577/00003943","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_10002_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国際基督教大学","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"00733938","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"open access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Landau, Samantha","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"3978","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-09-01"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"13-Landau.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.6 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"Haunted Homes and Uncanny Spaces:The Gothic in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson","url":"https://icu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4044/files/13-Landau.pdf"},"version_id":"dbbbae20-1ee8-4e64-aafc-aa17b4e0b1de"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Haunted Homes and Uncanny Spaces: The Gothic in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Haunted Homes and Uncanny Spaces: The Gothic in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson","subitem_title_language":"en"},{"subitem_title":"Haunted Homes and Uncanny Spaces: The Gothic in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"14","path":["422"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2015-09-01"},"publish_date":"2015-09-01","publish_status":"0","recid":"4044","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Haunted Homes and Uncanny Spaces: The Gothic in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson"],"weko_creator_id":"14","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-10-02T04:57:12.521033+00:00"}
