There is still a discussion, however, about whether Japanese are collectivist or not, and there are questions regarding some situations functioning in which the collectivistic norm functions in harmony or ʽtuningʼ with the environment of everyday relations. In the clinical context, futsu (ʽnormalʼ, ʽnormalityʼ) has been designated as a concept that relates to adaptation or maladaptation. In this study, noticing the adherence to futsu, the relationship of the adherence to futsu and maladaptation was examined through a single case study of the counseling process of a high-school dropout woman. Consequently, the adherence of futsu was caused by the anxiety and irritation,which was occurred during recognition of the dissociation of the real self from futsu. Thus, the negative emotion was activated whenever the dissociation between futsu and the self was recognized; The adherence of futsu was strengthened, and the maladaptation linked.
