Cialdini et al.(1991) divided social norms into two types. The injunctive norm is defined by moral rules, which reflects what people approve/disapprove. On the other hand, the descriptive norm is decided by what most people do in a particular situation, which may bring about perceived typicality. In the experimental questionnaire, all students from a public elementary school responded to one of the three scenarios, in which the main character showed high/middle/low performance relative to his/her school friends in an academic achievement test. In these scenarios, higher performance was regarded as conforming to the injunctive norm,and equivalence to others reflected the descriptive norm. Three studies indicated that upper/middle/lower grades showed a convergent pattern of affective reactions. Students feel normality and positive affect when they perform at a high level, whereas they feel the least negative affect when they perform equivalent to the others.
