The data was collected through a questionnaire survey and two written tests. The questionnaire was designed to gather information on learners' strategy use, and the two tests were intended to measure learners' receptive and productive vocabulary size. The statistical analysis of the data revealed that contextual encoding is the most effective strategy to acquire receptive vocabulary. Further, it was indicated that contextual encoding and activation strategy are effective for productive vocabulary acquisition. Moreover, the positive correlation between the bottom-up belief ('words should be acquired in context') and productive vocabulary size was suggested. A cluster analysis was also conducted, and it identified three groups within the target group. A minority of successful learners who are superior especially in productive vocabulary size select strategies effectively. They are guessing meaning of vocabulary, using dictionary, memorizing through encoding, and activating vocabulary.
