The new education course guidelines for elementary and junior high schools were revised in 2008. The addition of ‘items related to traditional linguistic culture and characteristic of the Japanese language’ were included in the division of Kokugo (Japanese language education). As a result, Japanese classics must be taught in elementary schools as have been taught in junior high schools.
