Occupying the entire second\nhalf-line and being free from the alliteration constraint in its final\nmetrical beat, the clause provides a useful device to meet the metrical\nrequirements as well as to increase the credibility of the source from\nwhich the poet adapted the story. Various examples that include “as\nthe book says” and similar expressions suggest that the underlying\nstructure of recurring phrases in the first half-line is lexical while that\nin the second half-line is syntactic.
