These efforts contrast with efforts of other ethnic communities that, while similarly engaged in dramatically facilitating their children’s literate acquisition of a world language such as English, ultimately emphasize one of the two languages (typically L2) for future credentials and demote literate proficiency in the other language (typically L1) to a form of enrichment. Striving for “balance” in the two languages is necessitated both by the perceived advantages of biliteracy and by the circumstances of sojourning, but successful balancing requires considerable academic effort during childhood. Ethnographic interviews with three sojourning parents were conducted to understand the range of parental efforts at arranging their children’s childhood academic language environments (CALEs) in both languages, as well as the experience of balancing academic activity in both languages.
