The main focus of this paper would be the sociocultural practices of literacy. The first part of this paper will deal with the individual dimension of literacy which is termed as autonomous model of literacy by Street. The later half of the paper will deal with the sociocultural aspects of literacy. Sociocultural perspective primarily focuses on literacy as a social and cultural phenomenon which exists between people and connects individuals with different points of time. Street termed it idelogical model of literacy. Ideological model of literacy contrasts with what the autonomous model of literacy. This paper will also focus on the oral and written languages.
