Two studies manipulated kind of relationships (study1) and the degree of intimacy with friends (study2). In the study1, “middle” performance level condition revealed relatively higher calmness and lower negative emotion than “superior” or “inferior” condition despite kind of relationships. In the study2, the same tendency as study1 was indicated except high-intimacy condition. Japanese intended to be “middle” because of deep concern with maintaining their relationships. This tendency was notable especially among moderate intimate relationship. Furthermore, respondents in “extreme superior” performance level condition indicated lower calmness than “superior” or “middle” condition. It was suggested that extreme high performance imply diversity with others, therefore people feel uneasy at their disharmony among reference group.
