| 内容記述 | Despite an interest in the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle to improve teaching and learning in Japanese higher education, research on English language program evaluation remains scarce. The current study attempts to take a small step forward in language program evaluation by analyzing standardized test scores in relation to the motivation of test takers, while working within institutional constraints. The data consisted of pretest scores (TOEFL), posttest scores (IELTS), and survey responses of 134 participants. Test scores were standardized with z-scores. A one-way ANOVA was conducted to compare the growth across the four streams. Correlations were run between the test scores and the responses to the survey questions relating to test preparation, test experience, and test motivation. It was found that participants in the lowest proficiency group showed significant score gains compared to those in higher proficiency groups. The results also indicated that participants with an immediate need for the test score had greater score gains. We discuss how test takers’ level of motivation may affect test results, and how the test scores alone do not answer the question of program efficacy. The implications of this study may be of interest to those seeking alternative approaches and case studies in program evaluation. | |||||||||
