Based on\nperformance studies which assume all of social reality is constructed by\nactions, behaviors and events, this study reveals the dynamism of\nwidowhood in Tamil Nadu, the southern part of India. Specifically the\nfocus is on widows in a scheduled caste village in rural area. The study\nshows that Hinduism, Dravidian culture, the state government's policies,\nattitudes toward widows in communities and the caste system affect on\nshaping widowhood. Certain behaviors and rituals which are learned,\nrehearsed and presented over time form widow’s identity as a “shadow.”\nHowever, it does not mean that widows cannot do anything but\nreproducing the identity.
