This paper examines social network development and its meaning for\nJapanese language students studying abroad in Japan. Four university students participated\nin this study, with each student being interviewed about his/her life in Japan. The results\nrevealed a number of commonalities and also showed that despite each student having\ndifferent social networks, they had an important community supported by close friendship.\nSpending time and sharing space with his/her friends was the most important influencing\nfactor in order to facilitate his/her friendship development.
