The subjects recognize that “hai” has the function of\nmaintaining a high level of formality and establishing and developing a conversation, and\nthat “ee” has the function of showing agreement and empathy. Further, the subjects\nrecognize that the function of “ee” as a response that actively expresses the speaker’s\nopinion and as a response to shared information among the speakers.\nWe confirm that the recognition of the function of “ee” differs with person, and that the\nfunction of “hai” and “ee” works negatively if only one is used. This can be seen from the\nsubjects’ comments as follows. If only “hai” is used, it would be “too formal,” “too\nserious,” and “unapproachable.” If “ee” is used exclusively, it would be “hard to see the end\nof a topic,” “annoying,” and “it will let a speaker talk endlessly.”\nFurther, all the subjects pointed out that it is natural and appropriate to use both “hai”\nand “ee” in a conversation.
