Participants were 247 (122 male, 125 female) Japanese public junior high school children, 136 (87 male, 49 female) Japanese public high school students, and 14 (3 male, 11 female) Japanese private university students. Questionnaires were administered to individuals belonging to families consisting of three siblings. Participants responded to various items related to their sibling relationships and friend relationships. In addition, each participant was asked to answer the following questions: \"How successful are you compared to your brother/sister (close friend) in the following things: being good at sports, artistic ability, performing well on a highly self-relevant subject?\" Participants rated each of these items using a 5-point scale (1: my sibling is far more successful~5: I am far more successful). Data were analyzed using the MANOVA procedure (older-younger, sex, age difference: below 3 vs. above 3, and age level: junior high school, high school, university). The results showed that the main effects of older-younger, sex, and age level were statistically significant (using Wilks' Lambda). An interaction effect between age difference, sex, and age level was also found (using Wilks' Lambda). Oldersibling respondents rated themselves better than their younger siblings on a highly self-relevant subject. Respondents rated themselves better than their siblings and their friends on a highly self-relevant subject as they grew up, and their sibling relationships were positive. On the other hand, respondents rated themselves worse than their friends on sociability as they grew up.
