A quasi-experimental study was conducted involving 32 participants in two intact classrooms in a Japanese private high school. Instructional treatments consisted of the provision of a text reconstruction task and explicit grammar explanation. One experimental group received a text reconstruction task, which was followed by a brief explicit metalinguistic explanation while the other experimental group was engaged in a reconstruction task only. Written picture description tasks and grammatical judgment tests were given as a pretest and a post-test. The results of paired samples t-tests revealed the positive effect of the output activity.
