SL, based on the experiential education theory of John Dewey, aims to help students learn living knowledge from social service activities they engage in of their own will. It is similar to project work in emphasizing the importance of experience, however this study considers the difference between these methods.\nThe case study of two students in volunteer service suggests that project work that focuses on linguistic and socio-cultural learning may impede overseas students in building human relationships with Japanese people.\nAlternatively, volunteer service seems to be effective not only in linguistic and socio-cultural learning but also in developing in the learner a sense of responsibility, career plans, and cross-cultural symbiosis. From the results of the case study I argue that introducing SL into TJFL will expand its possibilities as global citizenship education.
